Helen, Georgia is Amazing

I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I recently visited Helen, Georgia just to get away from the pressures of work and school. Picked just for the plain fact that it was sort of in the mountains and had some unique scenic offerings. I didn't really anticipate what all I would be getting. When I drove through the town the first time, I was very pleased. They still had the Christmas lights up. I thought to myself, "WOW, I bet this would have been a spectacular place to be at Christmas time. Now, if it would just snow." Yes, for every man that reads this, I'm a woman and never satisfied. However, in my defense, my boyfriend said the same thing. The town in is a Bavarian village and offers many quaint shops. It's like taking a step back into old German time. There were also several hiking trails that had wonderful waterfalls. It appears that tubing is huge hear as well. I will go back. There's a lot I'd like to do!

I have to agree w/ Trevelin' Dave, Helen is a highly over-rated, tourist dump. Food isn't good, prices are too high, goods are cheap; too many tacky tourist shops, and the crowds are often too big, especially in the fall, when parking is a hugh problem. There are plenty of other, much nicer towns to visit in N. GA I too spend a lot of time in the N GA mountain area - for better food/shopping try Dahlonega (Smith House), Blue Ridge (Toccoa River Restaurant) and Ellijay.

You are correct. It is an amazing place. Unicoi State Park, Anna Ruby Falls, Babyland General Hospital (Cleveland), and just a little further north, the highest peak in Georgia at 4784 ft., Brasstown Bald. You can see 4 states from up there. Vogel State Park is 8 miles west of there. Richard Russell Hwy. runs from Hwy.180 near the big mountain all the way back down to Helen. There is a lot to do and see and only 2 hours north of Atlanta, GA.

I love the north Georgia mountains. Spend as much time as I can up there. But I find Helen to be an over-rated tourist trap. I don't get it. I go to the mountains to enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet. Helen is overcrowded and the traffic on a week-end, especially in the fall, is terrible.
