Tragedy at Fidalgo Bay

Fidalgo Bay RV Resort is located on a spit of land that juts out into Fidalgo Bay and intersects the Tommy Thompson trail that starts in the quaint little town of Anacortes and follows an old railroad rightaway connecting March Point via a trestle over Fidalgo Bay which has been converted to a footbridge. It is that incredibly scenic trail that keeps us coming back to the RV resort. The trestle has been there for decades and only converted to a footbridge less then 10 years ago. There is a group of local people that wanted the trestle removed rather then converted to a footbridge and this has been a contentious issue for sometime. On October 15, 2009 the footbridge mysteriously caught fire at midspan and apparently started near the water level and is now closed. My wife and I live only 50 miles from this RV resort spend 3 to 4 weeks there every year and we will likely spend less time there now unless the City of Anacortes can repair the damage and reopen the bridge. Very sad!
