The fort itself was abandoned in 1858 after the country signed an agreement with Chief Billy Bowlegs and persuaded him and his warriors to move west. The fort remained idle until a small number of Union troops took control in 1863 and remained in the hands of the Union Army for the duration

The fort was again deserted when the war ended and it stayed that way until a new rush of settlers moved into the area in 1882. Fort Myers soon became one of the largest cities in southwestern Florida and gained top recognition as a winter get-a-way when the Royal Palm Hotel was built in 1898.

Another sporting event not nationally recognized, but certainly nationally known among college recruiters and college coaches is the City of Palm Classic High School Basketball Tournament. The tournament is held each year in mid December and features most of the top high school basketball teams in the country.
The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium features three nature trails that will place you among some of the most beautiful landscapes anywhere. The center also features a quality museum, an outstanding planetarium and bird and butterfly aviaries.
Tours are available at both the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Homes on McGregor Boulevard. These homes are both primary tourist attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
