FORT MYERS, FL

The City of Fort Myers was incorporated in 1885 and is the County Seat of Lee County, Florida. It has become the gateway to the major vacation destination that is Southwestern Florida. The area was chosen by both Henry Ford and Thomas Edison as the location of their winter homes.

The area was originally a military fort, built to protect early settlers from local Seminole Indians. The fort itself was abandoned in 1858 after the country signed an agreement with Chief Billy Bowlegs and persuaded him and his warriors to move west. The fort remained idle until a small number of Union troops took control in 1863 and remained in the hands of the Union Army for the duration
