Lake Havasu is located in Mojave County, Arizona and was originally established as a rest camp for WWII Air Corp personnel. Lake Havasu City was established in 1964 as a planned community by Robert McCullah who had purchased 3,500 acres along the lake front. The city was incorporated in 1978 and has blossomed into a very desirable vacation destination since. The city boasts several outstanding Lake Havasu RV Parks.
The creation of the lake was the result of the Parker Dam being built in 1938 on the Colorado River. The dam was one of three built during the 1930’s and 40’s along the southern portion of the river. The others are the Davis dam and Hoover dam.

In 1968 Lake Havasu shocked the world by purchasing the London Bridge. The City of London had decided to build a new bridge and Lake Havasu paid the Londoners $2.5 million for the old bridge. The bridge was completely disassembled, each stone was catalogued and it was shipped to Lake Havasu City and rebuilt at an additional cost of $7 million. The bridge was officially dedicated and opened in October of 1971. It remains the areas biggest tourist attraction today, being the second most visited attraction in the entire state of Arizona with only the Grand Canyon attracting more visitors. The bridge spans 930 feet across the man-made canal that flows from Lake Havasu to Thompson Bay.
Lake Havasu has become a very desirable destination for college and university students during their annual spring break period which varies slightly from school to school. This allows Havasu to have an extended period where students gather for fun and entertainment. Coverage of spring break activities has been featured on MTV expanding the city’s reputation as a “party town”. Well, a periodic party town, at least.
A Lake Havasu RV Park is an excellent choice for a water sports adventure. March to September is the prime season for activities on the lake and within the city as water sports are the focus of several annual events. The city plays host, annually, to the World Jet Ski Races, many professional fishing tournaments, a pyrotechnics convention called “Western Winter Blast” and the very popular custom boat regattas. There is also an annual triathlon and the Havasu Half Marathon to test the skills and endurance of both local and world class athletes.
Your Lake Havasu RV Camping experience can provide a wet and wonderful time in a very unusual setting. Gear up and have fun!
