Original inhabitants of the area were the Tequesta Indians. In the late 1500s the first Europeans came to the area and brought with them diseases that natives could not combat. This, coupled with a continuous battle with the neighboring Calusa Tribe, led to a huge decline of the Tequesta people.
It wasn’t until the early to mid 1800s that settlers began to establish residence in the area. These brave settlers, mostly farmers, were continually set upon by the Seminoles, forcing them to leave their settlements for a safer life elsewhere. It would not be until the late 1800s that the area would become populated again.
