Clearwater lies due west of Tampa and northwest of St. Petersburg in Pinellas County, Florida and is the smallest of the three major cities that make up what is known as the Tampa Bay Area.
The original residents of this geographical area were the Tocobaga people of Native American decent. During the Seminole Wars of the early 1800s, the Army built Fort Harrison on a bluff that overlooked Clearwater Harbor. The area later became part of a residential development called Harbor Oaks.
In the mid 1800s after much of the area’s land had been claimed and developed for farming by early settlers, the area became known as Clearwater Bay. The first road to join Clearwater with Tampa was built in 1849

With the majority of the male population away fighting for state’s rights during the American Civil War, the city became easy prey for Union gunboats and raiding parties who continually set upon the city’s supplies.
The railroad came to the area in 1888 and led to the city being incorporated in 1891. The railroad also promoted the area as a vacation get-a-way and several large hotels began to populate the area.
Today, Clearwater is a choice for many vacationers and boasts a great selection of activities and attractions. A Clearwater RV Campground is a great place to start your adventure in this wonderfully picturesque location.
Clearwater is quite proud of its character and heritage and it is chartered to contribute to its legacy for years to come. The Clearwater Art and Design Program is funded to promote and construct projects that artistically enhance all aspects of the city and its surroundings.
The city hosts several annual events including the Imagine International Film Festival, The Fun N Sun Festival, Clearwater Celebrates America, the Clearwater Jazz Festival, the Hispanic Heritage Festival and the Foster Grant Ironman World Championships. Each event is very popular with both residents and visitors to the area.
The Philadelphia Phillies have their Spring Training Facility in Clearwater and in the early spring, one can find major league baseball being played at Bright House Field.
Clearwater is a great place for all types of outdoor activities including biking and running or picnicking and maybe a little shopping and Clearwater Camping is a wonderful way to find rest and relaxation between your activity moments.
