Expert Advice

  • Seaside Harmony - We walked barefoot down the beach, dangling our Teva sandals by their straps. As we kicked through the warm, clear water, the sand melted between our toes. A jogger approached us, fit and tan. We sucked in our white stomachs. It made us feel more, well, you know. We should have been jogging too, but now, at 6:30 in the morning, the sun was already peeping over the tree tops, and we preferred to just stroll and look for shells.
  • Casual Key West - The blazing sun is about to sink into the Gulf of Mexico, leaving a long twilight to smile on the tiny island of Key West. Gathered at Mallory Square for the nightly ritual are artists and authors, preachers and performers, musicians and mimes, and, most of all, the most-eclectic assortment of tourists to be found anywhere in the country. It only measures four miles by two miles and has a checkered history, but Key West attracts 2 million visitors every year who go to hobnob with the Conchs, as the natives are called, and the “newcomers” who initially came for a visit and never left.
  • Take the Low Road - “There’s an alligator on the right side of the tram, and two more on the left,” our tour guide announced. Expecting to see the full length of one of nature’s oldest specimens, we looked in vain until we realized that the lumps protruding from the water were indeed alligators. We soon became adept at spotting the motionless critters, including one with bright yellow stripes. Our guide explained that, when born, baby alligators bear these distinctive markings.
  • America’s Oldest City - “I’ll take St. Augustine or leave my bones before its walls,” swore James Oglethorpe, as he laid siege to the Castillo de San Marcos and its Spanish garrison at St. Augustine in 1740. Oglethorpe intended to drive the Spaniards from Florida before they could attack his new British colony of Georgia. But the Spanish commander, Governor Manuel de Montiano, had other ideas. He pledged to “shed his last drop of blood in defense of St. Augustine.”
  • Sand, Seafood and Fun in the Sun - Long, white sugar-sand beaches littered with shells, warm emerald water, protected bays for kayaking and snorkeling, world-class fishing, some of the best seafood in the country and an unspoiled natural environment waiting for hiking and biking; was there any reason not to explore Florida's northwestern seashores?
